Get Carey Mulligan's hair and makeup from The Great Gatsby

Carey Mulligan is the perfect choice to play Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's remake of The Great Gatsby. But, even a gorgeous actress like Mulligan needs a little help transforming into the '20s-era socialite. We asked the pros for tips on how we can get the character's sexy hair and makeup from the movie.

Carey Mulligan in The Great Gatsby

We're totally loving the short flapper 'do that Carey Mulligan rocks in Baz Luhrmann's brash and colorful interpretation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.

And — lucky for us — the look is actually pretty simple to replicate.

"The Gatsby look brings back the era of flappers and the introduction of women going short with their hair," Fernando Salas, celebrity stylist and creator of White Sands Hair Care, told SheKnows.

Not sure how to ask for the cut at the salon? Salas makes it simple.

"This cut is a classic shorter A-line bob. The lower nape area is cut with graduation, while the sides are cut with zero graduation," he said. "A side fringe creates the silhouette and frames the face."

Add accessories and then finish the style by cutting "interior longer-length layers with the tips of the shears to softly chip into each section for added movement. This technique is also done in the fringe area for softness."

At-home styling

You know how the style always looks better in the salon than it does at home? Salas says that doesn't have to be the case here.

"To style at home, it is vital to create a silk-like base to copy when her bob is straight," he said.

First, shampoo and condition the hair with a salon-quality shampoo and conditioner, like White Sands' Orchid Bliss.

"With this, shampooing can help cure split ends, as the line's orchid extract instantly restores the 'cement' between the cuticle cells to strengthen hair and reinforce the cell membrane, creating a restructuring and smoothing effect with high shine," he said.

Next, spray White Sands' The Fix to add additional shine and reduce blow-drying time.

"Place your blow-dryer on a medium heat setting and use a mini round brush to blow the hair straight," he advised. "Opt for a cupping technique by rotating your wrist to style the soft fringe, while also bringing out any layers around the face.

Finish with a flexible-hold hairspray, like White Sands Infinity, and add any decorative headbands for extra Gatsby glamour.

Spoiler alert: This look is all about focusing on the deep, sexy eye makeup.

"Apply matte light-brown color all over the lid and along lower lashes," she told us. "Add deeper brown shadow in the crease. Black eyeliner and thick lashes are a must."

Brows should be filled and groomed into an oval shape. Then, finish off the look with blush and lipstick.

"Blend pink blush on the apple of the cheeks," Shten told SheKnows. "Use lipstick color that's close to your natural color but in a deeper shade. You also can use lip liner to add more definition to your lips."

Great Gatsby Costume Designer Exclusive

CATHERINE MARTIN, who created the costumes for the long-awaited film version of The Great Gatsby, was not always a fan of the famed F Scott Fitzgerald novel. In fact, the film's director, Baz Luhrmann had to use his persuasive skills to convince the designer to forget her initial opinions on the book and give it another try.

"I remembered Gatsby from being a teenager and not quite connecting with the story, but Baz was very persuasive," said Martin. "So I read the novel and - you know how one can rewrite history - I then became the greatest proponent of Gatsby ever. Much to Baz's irritation, because it was really his discovery and his insistence that made me read the book."

Martin worked alongside Miuccia Prada and Brooks Brothers to create the Twenties-inspired costumes that the cast wear, including Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio. The designer has long been fascinated by the book's time period, due to the social revolution that took place after World War I.

"Saying that women were at the forefront of that revolution, I don't know that it's entirely accurate, but they were certainly making strides," she said. "It was a time of incredible change where we basically go from a 19th-Century world to a modern, mechanised world reliant on machines in the space of five years."

Although maintaining the authenticity of original Twenties clothing was important to both Martin and Luhrmann, the idea of reconnecting audiences with the story was also a key focus.

"Baz was describing to me about the modern music in this version of Gatsby and he said, 'We've got to get the audience to feel how it must have felt to hear jazz for the first time at a party,'" she said. "You need to feel how scintillating, extraordinary, new and dynamic these things were; there needs to be a frisson of the new for people to actually understand what it was really like to be there in the Twenties."

Career Horoscopes: May 6 - May 12

Woman daydreaming at work

Turn up ahead

Solar eclipses are Astrology’s life course correctors. Where they occult in the heavens points to where you need to go. You can think of them as a cosmic version of GPS. The solar eclipse on Thursday will re-route the lives of everybody - especially people born under Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. You can expect changes in income, property value, your business partnerships, and career status. At first you may feel lost, but once you realize that the Stars know where you are going then you’ll settle down. After all, the Stars have been guiding sailors at sea for centuries.

aries

ARIES (March 20-April 18)

This is not the week to commit to anything. The solar eclipse on Thursday will bring an extraordinary opportunity that will be tantalizing and irresistible. But things that appear to be too good to be true often are as the occultations of Mercury and Mars suggest. “Occultation” means “hidden” and this moon shadowing of the planets points to all kinds of undisclosed costs and trip wire conditions that lie underfoot. Tread softly, and you should know what’s what by the 15th. That is when the coast will be clear.

taurus

TAURUS (April 19-May 19)

Let’s face it - you like the good life. But when you choose comfort over risk and the familiar over the untried, then you can wind up lowering the bar when you should be raising it. Right now the planets are pushing you to dig deep inside, to mine your inner resources, and to realize the potential that lies dormant within you. This may require you to turn your life upside down and to seek your future (and fortune) elsewhere. Go for it. You won’t be sorry.

gemini

GEMINI (May 20-June 19)

So are you better off today than you were a year ago? It’s an important question given that so much of what you’re dealing with now stems from what transpired around May 20th, 2012. This would be a good time to ask yourself what matters most, because you could be holding on to situations that have outlived their turn on your life’s stage. You need to let go of anything that isn’t up to par so that you can invest your energies in endeavors that will pay off.

cancer

CANCER (June 20-July 21)

If the recent parade of planets through fiery Aries taught you anything, it’s to get on out there and seize the day in a carpe diem sort of way. And now that you know you can do it, you must build on that momentum. People – like your boss – need to know that you are invested in being a success. Prove to him that you’re willing to go the distance, and he will give you plenty of opportunities to show off what you can do in the weeks ahead.

leo

LEO (July 22-Aug. 21)

Thursday’s solar eclipse promises to change your career status. You could go from the bottom of the barrel looking up to the top of the heap looking down in the blink of an eye. What that means – along with the resulting consequences – will take weeks to figure out. Meanwhile a rival at work is up to his old tricks again. Apply the vampire rule that evil cannot enter unless it is invited. Refuse to open the window of opportunity, and you will have nothing to worry about.

virgo

VIRGO (Aug. 22-Sept. 21)

You’re going to feel like you're back online this week when Mercury, planet of communication, conjoins Mars on May 7th. Instead of dropped calls and missing signals – the bane of your existence since February - you will find that the information you need is right there at your fingertips. Mercury is famous for hot tips, sneak peeks, and insider prices, so be ready to act fast – and to pay in cash of course. The shelf life on these steal deals is always short when Mercury is involved.

libra

LIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 21)

You are still not convinced that a colleague is doing everything that he can to get back on track, but keep your distance. This won’t be easy as you feel like he would make more headway if he would only listen to you. Yet the simple truth is that you can’t do people’s learning for them. Expect another stumble on Thursday, but hang back and let him pick himself up. You’ll be surprised by how resourceful he can be when you’re not doing the problem solving for him.

scorpio

SCORPIO (Oct. 22-Nov. 20)

The days before the solar eclipse will be emotional. Expect to ride a wave of extreme highs and lows. It’s also a time when you will want to keep that famous stinger of yours under wraps because Mercury’s occultation by the moon on May 9th will make you imagine all kinds of worst-case scenarios. You’re not really listening to people, and you’re at risk of creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. The key to working out your problems with your boss is to test less and to trust more.

sagittarius

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 20)

You can no longer turn a blind eye to personal foibles. Just because you forgive your own shortcomings doesn't mean that other people will. This will become especially apparent on May 9th when your recent job performance comes under fire. The simple truth is you can do better. And you will do better once you break some bad habits. Developments are underway that promise to move you from the rank-and-file to the head of the line. Make sure that you are at the top of your game.

capricorn

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 18)

There’s a time to bird-dog matters, and then there’s a time to let developments unfold on their own. Guess which one of those times this is? You really must learn to curb those micromanaging tendencies of yours – especially on Thursday when you’re at risk of wresting the reins out of the hands of the very person who can help you get to where you want to go. This person sees the way ahead clearer than you do right now, and you would be well-advised to follow his/her lead.

aquarius

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 17)

You’re doing the heavy lifting in your household when it comes to making ends meet. If you’re not burning the candle at both ends at work, then you’re finding new ways to squeeze a dime out of a nickel. Thankfully you’re good at running numbers, and you should know that your current game plan aimed at reducing debt will succeed in moving you out of the red and into the black by early July. You just need to keep on doing what you’re doing.

pisces

PISCES (Feb. 18-March 19)

Pisces people feel like the life they’re supposed to be living is waiting for them somewhere else. It’s why you talk about leaving your job, changing careers, or starting afresh halfway around the world. But how can you be happy with what you have when you’re constantly fixated on what you don’t? It isn’t easy being born under the sign of the dreamer. Ironically your dreams aren’t the problem; it’s your mistaken belief that dreams and reality don’t mix. You’ll discover how the two dovetail on May 9th.

Kristen Stewart On Ghesquière: “I’m So Proud Of Him”

KRISTEN STEWART has spoken out about her close designer friend Nicolas Ghesquière, saying that she's "so f***ing proud of him". The Vogue cover girl also hinted at the former Balenciaga creative director's plans for the future, and described her reaction upon hearing that he was to depart the French fashion house.

"I was like, 'Dude, are you okay?' and he was like (in a French accent), 'Yes, yes. I will tell you soon, but there are things happening.' Before I left, he was like, 'All right, I'll tell you,'" she said. "I'm so f***ing proud of him, because what he was about to do would rock people's worlds. He was just like, 'Believe for me.' I thought it was the coolest thing."

The 23-year-old and formed a strong working relationship with Ghesquière over the past year, appearing on his show front row on more than one occasion and wearing his designs for red carpet appearances - culminating in her fronting Balenciaga's most recent fragrance campaign.

"He is a reminder of how annoying everyone else is. It's not easy to walk a line that not every single person in the world is going to get in a second. Nicolas is the sort of person who loves swimming in rough water," she said. "I've felt the happiest I've ever felt wearing these clothes. I've also felt androgynous and rigid - it's like wearing a building."

The actress also described seeing the designer backstage after a show for Balenciaga.

"The look on his face after that show, he had this look like he was actually the kid who was being told he wasn't allowed to do something," she said in an interview with German magazine 032c, reports New York Magazine. "And he was totally not going to stand for it, and I said, 'I will totally run away with you.'"

Kimberley Walsh Wows In White Maria Grachvogel Dress

Kimberley Walsh lit up the London premiere of her new movie, All Stars, last night wearing a stunning white Maria Grachvogel floor-sweeper.

The flashbulbs went crazy for the singer's fitted gown, which featured sheer side panels to show off her tiny waist. She teamed her elegant look with hot pink nails and a matching lip. Beaut!

After posing for a series of snaps on the red carpet with her gorgeous brother Adam, Kimberley headed out for dinner to Nobu with her long-term boyfriend, Justin Scott. We hate to state the obvious, Justin – but how gorgeous does Kimberley look wearing a white dress, hmm? Just saying.

Kimberley plays Trish in the movie, which tells the story of two young dancers who put on a show to raise funds for their local youth centre. Aww.

She said: "I loved the script as soon as I read it. It is a heart-warming family film that will put a huge smile on your face."

Kimberley stars alongside 15-year-old Theo Stevenson, who she worked with on her debut movie, Horrid Henry, back in 2011.

Is there nothing this girl can't do?!
